Collecting Antique Furniture

Antique furniture are quality pieces of furniture that may be used to complement a home décor theme or style. They can be used as functional and decorative pieces for the whole house or for some rooms, or could be used as accents to a home's furnishings. They can also be used with different types of modern or contemporary and old building structures and styles.

Collecting Antique Furniture

To effectively match some antique furniture to a home décor, each homeowner will need to have some idea about the different types and styles of antique furniture they can use in their homes. Some common antique furniture types are Victorian, English, Asian, European and French furniture. For the most part, the different types of furniture and styles that were available in some of the antique eras were generally influenced by the styles and designs in some other previous eras.

Some styles that may be available in the market for most antique periods or eras may include gothic, Italian renaissance, rococo, Chinese, William and Mary furnishing, baroque, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Sheraton, Germany furniture and neo-classicism styles. These are generally defined from about the 13th century to the 19th century. For the Asian continent however, some of their furniture pieces may actually date back to some thousands years ago.

English furniture are from the Elizabethan era, they are generally characterized by some simple ornamentation like bulbs and nobs and ornamented fabrics and were designed more for function than aesthetics. They were mostly made with woods like oak, cherry, mahogany, teak and walnut.

Victorian furniture are characterized by gothic art and ornate designs and may be found in some colors like maroon, green, pink, purple and blue. They may also be upholstered with some patterned or velvet fabrics. Antique Victorian furniture were generally made with some oak, walnut and mahogany woods.

French furniture designs and styles were influenced by various styles including the gothic style, the use of Roman and Greek art for ornamentation and the Italian arts. French furniture were typically designed with some animal and floral forms, art nouveau, art deco designs and carvings that looked ornamental. They can be found as walnut, oak, ebony, mahogany and teak furniture.

European furniture made use of some classical and symmetrical designs and were made as flat surfaces, storages, sleeping and seating furniture. Antique European furniture generally looks more like pieces of art than furnit.
